Plant Peas For Fall

Peas are one of my favourite veggies – specifically sugar snap peas. While I wish they would grow all summer long in my area (Canada, Zone 6), I quickly learned that this vegetable thrives best in the spring and fall as they just can’t handle the hot summer months.

I didn’t start my garden until well into May and June of this year (2021), which means I missed the spring season and had to wait until fall to start growing this wonderful crop.

What I love most about this beautiful vegetable is how easy the plants are to start on your own and just how quickly they grow.

In this video I share how to direct sow sugar snap peas in a 5 gallon grow bag.

There are three types of peas:

  1. Sweet peas, aka garden peas or English peas, have inedible pods from which the seeds (peas) are taken.
  2. Snow peas produce edible, flat, stringless pods containing small peas.
  3. Snap peas produce thick, edible pods containing large/full-size peas.

In the spring, you can direct sow seeds directly in the soil about 4 to 6 weeks before your last frost. However, you can also start seeds indoors to get a jump on the gardening season. If starting your seeds as transplants, I would suggest using peat pots or peat pellets so as not to disturb the roots too much when it comes time to plant your transplants in your garden.

When it comes time to harvest your peas, it’s best to harvest in the morning as they are the most crisp at this time.
